2. Moreau Lake State Park

A sprawling and secluded nature reserve offering access to the Hudson River, Moreau Lake State Park is located less than 45 miles northeast of the Johnstown city center and can be reached in about one hour by car via route NY-29. Encompassing an area of over 6,200 acres, this place offers recreational opportunities year-round and is a popular spot for fishing, hiking, and paddling.

Moreau Lake State Park was established in the late 1960s and has since been one of the go-to weekend destinations among locals. Managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, this place features modern amenities including a concession stand, a museum, a nature center, and a large family campground with fire pits and picnic spots.

3. Schodack Island State Park

Covering a 1,000-acre island on the Hudson River, Schodack Island State Park is another beautiful recreation area that can be reached in a little over an hour by car via route I-90. Established in 2002 and welcoming over 125,000 acres, this place features a large family campground with 66 sites, picnic tables, and several miles of hiking and biking trails.
