Located about 45 miles northwest of Albany, the city of Johnstown, NY, is not only close to the state capital and other large urban areas, but also to beautiful nature reserves that attract families and groups of friends wanting to take a break from the routine. If you are looking for some nearby destinations you can explore in your shiny 2022 Ford Escape, these are three easy day trips you can go on from the city.

1. John Boyd Thacher State Park

Established in 1914 and spanning an area of over 2,000 acres, John Boyd Thacher State Park is a beautiful nature reserve featuring numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as panoramic views of the Taconic and Green Mountains. Open from the early summer months until mid-November, this state park is a top-rated destination for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, birding, and picnicking.

John Boyd Thacher State Park is located a little over 35 miles southeast of downtown Johnstown and can be reached in less than an hour by car along route NY-30. One of the most visited parts of this nature reserve is the Indian Ladder Trail, which goes through lush forests, cascades, underground springs, and wooded areas.

2. Albany

If you want to learn more about the history and culture of the state, check out important landmarks and eat some great food, the city of Albany is a great place to visit. Located a little under 50 miles southeast of downtown Johnstown, the New York state capital can be reached in less than an hour by car along route I-90, making it an excellent and easy day trip.

Once you make your way to Albany, one of the best places to start exploring is the downtown area, where you can find local attractions including the New York State Capitol, Corning Preserve, and the SUNY Building. Some of the best museums and cultural centers you should not miss while in town include the New York State Museum, the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, and the Albany Institute of History & Art.

3. Adirondack State Park

Spanning an area of over 9,300 acres, Adirondack State Park is a beautiful nature reserve located about 15 miles northwest of downtown Johnstown. Established in the late 1800s, this state park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and has been a popular recreation area among visitors from all over the state since its foundation. Popular activities among visitors include hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.
